Protect Your Pets After Storms & Flooding

Protect Your Pets After Storms & Flooding
With recent heavy rains and flooding, there’s an increased risk of leptospirosis—a serious bacterial disease that affects both pets and people. But it’s not the only danger lurking after storms. Flood conditions can also increase exposure to other harmful bacteria, parasites, viruses, and mosquito-borne diseases like heartworm.
Pet Risks After Flooding Oahu SPCA
Leptospirosis spreads through urine from infected wildlife and animals, contaminating puddles, standing water, mud, and even damp grass—making post-storm environments especially risky.
Important: Leptospirosis is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Watch for signs in your pet:
-- Lethargy
-- Vomiting
-- Loss of appetite
-- Fever
-- Increased thirst or urination
-- Coughing or respiratory changes
-- In severe cases, kidney or liver failure
Prevention is key:
Vaccination and routine preventatives are the best way to protect your pet. This includes:
-- Leptospirosis & Distemper/ Parvo vaccines
-- FVRCP vaccines
-- Monthly heartworm prevention
-- Flea, tick, and parasite control
After storms or flooding:
-- Don’t let pets drink from puddles or standing water
-- Avoid muddy or flooded areas when possible
-- Rinse or wash paws after walks
-- Reduce exposure to mosquitoes and wildlife
